The keynote address opened the COPE Seminar 2021. Taking place over a week, the online seminar included a series of nine sessions, with speakers invited to share their experiences.
This webinar, recorded May 2021, deals with the impact of discriminatory practices in editorial processes and peer review, promoting of social justice and equality in scholarly publishing, best practices around identity and name changes, including examples of implementation, and addresses historical offensive content.
Dr Trevor Lane, COPE Council member, was an invited panellist in the Ethics Clinic at the virtual 2021 Annual Meeting of the Council of Science Editors (CSE) on 5 May 2021. The Ethics Clinic is a regular feature of the CSE Annual Meeting and is jointly sponsored by the CSE Editorial Policy Committee and COPE. This year’s topic was the ethics of data sharing (see PDF).
Ethical use of professional editorial and publishing support services
Dr Trevor Lane, COPE Council member, was an invited speaker at the 2020 Asia Pacific Virtual Event of the International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE), which was themed 'Evolving Trends in Scholarly Publishing'. In the session on 'Transparency in the Publishing Process' on 14 September 2020, he presented a webinar on “Ethical use of professional editorial and publishing support services”.
In 2020 we hosted a webinar with invited speakers from the Text Recycling Research Project (TRRP) to hear about their latest findings, and the ethical and practical issues involved in establishing good practice and effective policy.
In 2019 we hosted a webinar discussing allegations of misconduct, with a research institution perspective on research misconduct, and a discussion on the role of editors, journals and publishers in dealing with allegations of misconduct.
COPE was invited to speak on responsible authorship in this panel discussion. Charon Pierson gave a view from COPE with an analysis of 134 authorship cases that have been submitted to COPE, by members, for discussion and advice.
