Mabel Chew is a Senior Editor at The Lancet, where she is co-chair of The Lancet’s Group for Racial Equity (GRacE), which works to advance racial and ethnic equity within and outside The Lancet Group. She is a Working Group member of the 'Joint commitment for action on inclusion and diversity in publishing' a coalition of over 55 publishing organisations (and over 15,000 journals) brought together by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Mabel gained her medical degree at The University of Sydney, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Before joining The Lancet, she was Practice Editor at The BMJ for 10 years, following 8 years as Deputy Editor at the Medical Journal of Australia. She has had a longstanding interest in publication ethics, and has been heavily involved in developing and implementing journal competing interests policies. She is keen to encourage ethical publishing practice, and has presented on these matters to academic groups worldwide, including the European Cardiology Section Foundation, Johns Hopkins Medicine (US), NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence (Australia) and the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford (UK). She has been a part time primary care physician in Sydney, Australia since 1995, with an interest in chronic pain, mental health, and women’s health, and previous experience in palliative medicine, care of older people, and microbiology. She has also been a Lecturer in the Department of General Practice, The University of Sydney.
