J-STAGE Seminar, Japan

Trevor Lane, COPE Council Member, represented COPE at the Second J-STAGE Seminar in Tokyo, Japan, on 21 October 2019, at the invitation of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

Trevor gave a keynote presentation titled “COPE: Promoting integrity in research and its publication”, with the aim of updating J-STAGE representatives and participants on how COPE is helping publishers, editors, institutions, and other stakeholders, to take collective responsibility for the integrity of the world’s scholarly record.

Supported and run by JST, J-STAGE is Japan’s premier online full-text archive and database platform for the country’s academic society journals. With the theme of “The transformation in scholarly publishing: Research integrity and publication ethics”, this second annual one-day J-STAGE seminar focused on the ethical implications and challenges of the rapidly evolving international publishing landscape.

The more than 100 attendees consisted of J-STAGE staff, journal editors, society officials, academics, and publishing professionals. The event was co-organised by JST and the International Association of STM Publishers (STM). The morning session, hosted by STM, covered STM’s approaches to upholding ethics in the face of emerging publishing trends, as well as perspectives from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Association for the Promotion of Research Integrity. The afternoon session, hosted by JST, covered COPE’s roles and activities in promoting publication ethics internationally and in Asia, and related roles and activities of the Japanese Association of Medical Journal Editors and Japan Society for Occupational Health.
