Trevor Lane, COPE Council Member, was invited to represent COPE at the 2019 Convention of the Asia Pacific Association of Medical Journal Editors (APAME) in Xi’an, China, on 4-5 September 2019.

On the first day, he delivered a keynote speech in a session on publication ethics and on the second day, he chaired a parallel session on journal evaluation.

His keynote presentation, titled “Ethical Issues and Publishing Misconduct”, explored the meaning of COPE’s mission as expressed in its current strapline “Promoting integrity in research and its publication”. After introducing overlapping issues related to professional ethics, research ethics, and publication ethics from the researcher’s perspective, he discussed emerging topics in publishing misconduct from the perspective of providers of publishing and publishing-associated services. The talk ended with an overview of COPE’s roles and activities and how COPE serves its members through facilitation, guidance, discussion, and educational resources.
