PUBLICATION ETHICS AT THE FOUR POINTS OF THE JOURNAL EDITING COMPASS: 1ST ASIA PACIFIC COPE SEMINAR AND FORUM 2011
COPE is very pleased to announce its 1st Asia Pacific Seminar and Forum. The COPE seminar on 14 November will include a COPE Forum in the afternoon.
The theme of the seminar is how publication ethics is similar across different disciplines. Journal editors, researchers and journal authors from the four points of the scientific compass— physical sciences, life sciences, social sciences and health sciences—face many of the same challenges (authorship disputes, plagiarism and duplicate publication). COPE's 1st Asia Pacific seminar will provide insights from each of these four compass points. The speakers will focus on the ethical issues they have faced personally, and discuss how they dealt with them and how they have crafted their policies and processes to avoid potential future problems.
The seminar will include invited talks:
- Physical sciences—Professor Richard O’Hair, Professor of Chemistry and Associate Dean Science (Research & Industry); Associate Editor of Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry
- Life sciences—Professor David Vaux, Assistant Director, Division Head, Cell Death and Cell Signalling, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research; former Editorial Board member Journal of Cell Biology
- Social sciences—Professor Alfred Allan, Professor of Psychology at Edith Cowan University; member of the inaugural Psychologists Board of Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society
- Health sciences—Dr Neville Gibbs, Head of Department of Anaesthesia; Editor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
- Research integrity—Dr Suzanne Morris, Research Integrity Officer, Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), University of Queensland
In addition, there will be:
- COPE Forum in the afternoon with discussion of cases submitted by members.
- Opportunities to network with other editors and share your experiences and challenges.
Members are invited to submit cases for the Forum. Members can submit cases whether or not they are attending the seminar, but COPE would like those presenting the cases to be at the meeting, either in person or by telephone to present the case. Please submit cases directly to the administrator by 31 October 2011.
The seminar is free for COPE members and $150 AUD for non-members. Non-members wishing to attend can contact the administrator for details on how to join COPE.
