"Correcting the literature"

Forum: Thursday 18 October 2012
Seminar: Friday 19 October 2012

Bechtel Conference Centre, ASCE Building, 1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Reston, Virginia, USA

COPE is pleased to announce its 4th North American Seminar and Forum, which will be held at the Bechtel Conference Centre, the home of the American Society of Civil Engineers, in Reston, Virginia, less than 10 miles from Dulles Airport, Washington, D.C. The COPE Forum will take place on the afternoon of 18 October (2–5 pm) followed by a whole day Seminar on 19 October. The seminar program can be downloaded here.

The theme of this year’s seminar repeats that of the recent successful European seminar, “Correcting the literature”, which will encompass all of the issues involved, including why corrections are needed, the appropriate ways to deal with them in terms of expressions of concern, corrections and retractions, the scale of the problem and what can go wrong. Editors, publishers, authors and all those interested in publication ethics are welcome to attend.

The seminar will include invited talks:

  • Dr Barbara Jasny, Deputy Editor of Science magazine, will talk about her experience of handling retractions and how this has influenced their journal policies
  • Mark Seeley, Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Elsevier, will discuss the legal issues associated with expressions of concern, corrections and retractions
  • Carol Meyer, from CrossRef, will talk about CrossMark and its importance in signalling the status of scholarly content

In addition, there will be:

  • Breakout workshop sessions in the afternoon with discussion of related cases.
  • Opportunities to network and share your experiences and challenges.

The Seminar is free for COPE members and $300 US for non-members. Registration is now open until 3 October 2012. Please register below. (Details on nearby hotels are available from the administrator.)

The Forum is only open to COPE Members. Non-members wishing to attend the Forum should contact the administrator for details on how to join COPE. COPE members are invited to submit cases for the Forum on 18 October. Members can submit cases to the Forum whether or not they are attending the Seminar on 19 October, but anyone presenting a case should be present at the Forum Meeting on the 18 October, either in person or by telephone. Please submit cases to the administrator by 3 October 2012.
